Julian Stockwin was sent at the age of fourteen to Indefatigable, a tough sea-training school. He joined the Royal Navy at fifteen before transferring to the Royal Australian Navy, where he served for eight years in the Far East, Antarctic waters and the South Seas. In Vietnam he saw active service in a carrier task force. After leaving the Navy (rated Petty Officer), Julian practised as an educational psychologist. He lived for some time in Hong Kong, where he was commissioned into the Royal Naval Reserve. He was awarded the MBE and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Die Serie um Thomas Kydd der sich vom gepressten Seemann zum Offizier hochdient, geht mit "Invasion" jetzt in die zehnte Runde.Es spricht für den Autor Julian Stockwin daß er uns nicht ständig neue Aufgüsse von blutigen Gemetzeln unter Pulverdampf vorsetzt, sondern sich um Abwechslung bemüht und gleichtzitig versucht die Geschichte möglichst eng in die historischen Tatsachen einzubetten.So ist das Kernstück des neuesten Romans die abenteuerliche, aber nichts desto trotz wahre Geschichte, in der der Erfinder der ersten Unterseeboote und Torpedos aus Frankreich nach England gebracht wird um dort an der Verwirklichung seiner Ideen weiter zu arbeiten.Eng verbunden damit werden auch die moralischen Konflikte thematisiert, die sich aus diesen neuen Waffen ergeben und die aus der Mann gegen Mann Romantik der damaligen Kriege über die mechanisierte Kriegsführung der beiden Weltkriege bis zu den Massenvernichtungswaffen unserer Tage führtSo bleibt ein etwas zwiespältiger Eindruck. Das Buch ist lehrreich, gibt denkanstöße und hat einige sehr spannende Momente, doch ein übergreifender Spannungsbochen und die Seefahrerromantik die wir an diesen Romanen so lieben sind dem Realismus zum Opfer gefallen.
Wer Hornblower mag, mag sicherlich auch die spannenden maritimen Geschichten um Thomas Kydd, allerdings hier in der englischen Originalversion; ich bin inzwischen bei "Tenacious", dem sechsten Band der Serie.
